DISCOVERY SCHOOL ANNOUNCES CLOSING AT END OF SCHOOL YEAR
After 13 years in Fennville, Discovery Elementary will be closing its doors at the
end of this school year. Discovery is a K-8 Charter School chartered by Grand
Valley State University. The board of education made the agonizingly difficult
decision to close the school at a special meeting held on Friday, April 6th. A
projected budget shortfall and the necessity to draw upon financial reserves to
complete the current school year were cited as the reasons.
According to the school’s director, Bruce Foerch, “The student enrollment at
Discovery has been on the decline for the past several years and has been
accelerated by the severe economic downturn in our state. Since Discovery does
not provide bus service, parents must drop off and pick up their children each
school day. The increase in gasoline prices and the economic hardship this
imposes on our parents is a major factor in the decline in our enrollment.”
Discovery recently distinguished itself by becoming the 24th Glasser Quality
School worldwide. Achieving this goal was a long time dream of Ms. Judy Kratzer,
one of the founders of the school. “When we started the school we asked
ourselves ‘what would a perfect school look like?.’ Answering this question gave
us the framework on which to build our teaching philosophy. Glasser Choice
Theory became the cornerstone of our approach to educating our children.”
The Discovery board of education extends its heartfelt thanks to the dedicated
staff and parents who supported our school with their efforts and with their hearts
and minds over the past 13 years.
Discovery will continue operation of all grades through the end of the current
school term.
