On Saturday August 22nd and Sunday August 23rd, Fennville will host a Relay for Life event for the Allegan County Lake Shore region. The event will begin at 10:00am at Fennville High School’s Bruder Field, with the opening ceremony.
Relay raises funds for cancer research, advocacy, education and services. Now more than ever, patient services are needed! In fact, requests for services have risen by as much as 70% in the past year. Now, more than ever, ACS and the money raised by our amazing Relay volunteers are needed.
How Your Support Helps the American Cancer Society and Your Community Research
Your American Cancer Society is the largest source of private, not-for-profit cancer research funds in the United States, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. Since 1946, we have provided more than $3 billion to researchers early in their careers. Scientists supported by the Society have made great contributions, including: • Establishing the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. • Developing the Pap test to detect cervical cancer. • Dramatically increasing the cure rate for childhood leukemia. • Pioneering mammography as the standard for the early detection of breast cancer. • Developing a variety of cancer-fighting drugs such as Herceptin and Gleevec.
Education At least 50 percent of cancer deaths could be prevented if more Americans made healthier lifestyle choices. Your American Cancer Society is dedicated to helping constituents learn how to eat better and get active by providing the most up-to-date cancer information, as well as prevention and early detection guidelines. Our focus is to educate everyone about lifestyle risks and encourage change in health habits to reduce the risk of cancer.
As the delivery of health care continues to change, your American Cancer Society is working with partners in all sectors of the health care system to ensure that all individuals are offered a full range of preventive services to enable them to reduce the chance of a cancer diagnosis or to find their cancer at an early, treatable stage. Advocacy Cancer is not just a health issue it is a political issue. With our sister organization, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, your American Cancer Society is a leader in advocating for and enacting public policies consistent with our mission of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. By mobilizing individuals touched by cancer, we can communicate the Society’s public health agenda to constituents, media and our nation’s policy makers.
Patient Services Having cancer is hard. Finding help shouldn’t be. Dollars raised at Relay For Life events in our community and around the nation make it possible for your American Cancer Society to provide resources, support and information 24 hours a day, seven days a week through 1.800.ACS.2345 and http://www.cancer. org/.
Where does the money go? Your support of Relay For Life helps the American Cancer Society provide: • Free transportation to local cancer patients needing rides to and from treatment. • Support for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients by pairing them with trained breast cancer survivors who have undergone a similar experience. • A camp for young cancer patients and survivors ages 6 through 15 that offers them the opportunity to enjoy recreation and companionship as part of a traditional camping experience. • College scholarships for cancer survivors from Indiana and Michigan planning to attend an accredited college or university in either state. • Free lodging and a supportive environment for caregivers and cancer patients undergoing outpatient treatment. • 24-hour access to up-to-date cancer information and support in over 75 languages.

Remembering and Honoring Those Touched By Cancer What to do with Luminaria Bags.... Luminaria bags can be obtained at any Team Captain meeting or by contacting Janelle Nagy. Bags are generally sold as a fundraiser. The official price is $10 a bag, however, teams are free to set their price as appropriate to their audience. Bags are decorated in honor of a cancer survivor or caregiver. Decorations can be as simple as a name written in pencil or they can include glitter, cut outs, photos, etc. Luminaria Bags at Relay... Team Captains are responsible for bringing bags to Relay. If someone has purchased a bag, instruct them to bring the bag to Relay themselves, or to return it to a team member prior to Relay. At Relay, please store bags in an elevated, covered space. This will protect them from rain should a mid-day sprinkle occur. ACS will provide the sand and candles at Relay. Teams will fill their bags and encircle the track with them Relay evening. It is important that the bags go completely around the track, so please spread out as needed...this may mean that your bags will not be directly in front of your campsite...please understand the importance of having the entire track illuminated overnight. Teams will receive instructions prior to Relay and at Relay to guide the luminaria process. The Luminaria Ceremony.... The Relay For Life of Allegan County Lakeshore will host its Luminaria Ceremony on Saturday, August 22nd, 2009 at 10:00 p.m. at Fennville High School. Please attend if you would like to honor yourself or someone you love who has battled cancer. Come early to decorate a luminaria bag and place it around the track. Update: An honorarium presentation will take place during the Luminaria Ceremony. An "honorarium presentation" means that names of those who have battled cancer - both survivors and caregivers - will be scrolled on a screen for all to view. This presentation will play throughout the night as we walk. In order to have your loved one's names appear on the presentation, teams must submit them to our Luminaria Chair, Monica Looman. Names may be submitted via email at: mln5128@yahoo.com
**When sending honorarium emails, please be sure to write "Relay Luminaria" in the subject line.** Or names can be handwritten and submitted by Team Captain Meeting #4 (ABSOLUTELY NO late submissions will be accepted!). PLEASE PRINT CLEARLY! Click here for a submission form.
